Even as a relatively costly type of wood, many discerning craftsmen and architects use it for its bold statement. Fully-grown walnut trees are beautiful, with large, heavy-leaved foliage and wide-spreading branches. The leaves have a rich and pleasant scent.

Throughout history walnuts were highly regarded for their food and oil value. The trees are indigenous to Central Asia and Turkey and were introduced to Europe by Alexander the Great. The old English name for walnut meant foreign nut, other common names are: Italian, English, French, Persian, Circassian and Royal Walnut.

wood veneerThe color in European walnut wood veneer ranges from greyish brown to a rich dark brown. There are some instances when darker black or brown markings and contrast streaks appear. Other colors may also be displayed, such as yellowy orange to pinky brown. Essentially, the location where the tree is grown, along with the type of soil, determines the actual color of the wood.

Most Walnut logs are flat cut, unless they are of a very large dimension to where they can be quarter cut. The defects in the center are cut away during production. Some logs yield more lighter sapwood than others – sapwood in European walnut is desirable and creates an interesting dark light contrast.

wood veneersHigh grade European walnut logs used for architectural applications are often ten feet or longer, straight and cylindrical. These are difficult to find and therefore command a higher price. European walnut wood veneers are perfect for architectural work, wall paneling, and sophisticated furniture designs.

There are so many different uses for this tree, from the root level to the stretched out limbs. Depending on the logs they sometimes yield highly prized burls, decorative stump or butt wood   and sometimes even crotches. The elegant wood veneer produced from the European walnut is a striking and satisfying material to use. Although it may come at a higher price than some other materials, its beauty is well worth it.
